Class 9 Physics Notes & Study Material (CBSE 2026-27)

Welcome to your one-stop hub for CBSE Class 9 Physics! This is the year where you graduate from simply observing the world to actually calculating it — using equations, graphs, and the SI system to explain everything from a falling ball to a booming loudspeaker.

Aligned with the latest NEP 2020 and NCF-SE 2023 guidelines, these notes are designed to build the rock-solid foundation you’ll need for Class 10 and beyond.

Important Note

I am actively updating these notes for the latest syllabus. New chapters and numerical banks are being added weekly.

Class 9 Physics Chapters

As per the updated CBSE syllabus, Physics falls under Unit III: Motion, Force, Work and Sound. Here’s what you’ll be studying this year:

1. Motion

This chapter introduces you to the language of movement — distance, displacement, speed, velocity, and acceleration. You’ll learn to plot and interpret position-time and velocity-time graphs, and derive the three famous kinematic equations to solve real motion problems.

2. Force and Laws of Motion

Ever wondered why a ball keeps rolling or why you jerk forward when a bus stops suddenly? This chapter unpacks Newton’s three laws of motion, the concept of balanced/unbalanced forces, and the ever-present force of friction that governs our everyday world.

3. Work, Energy and Simple Machines

Here, “work” gets a strict scientific definition, and you’ll explore the fascinating dance between kinetic and potential energy through the Law of Conservation of Energy. This chapter also covers simple machines like levers and pulleys, teaching you how they give us a mechanical advantage in daily life.

4. Sound

Discover how sound is born from vibrations and travels as a longitudinal wave through solids, liquids, and air. You’ll master wave characteristics like frequency and amplitude, and understand real-world phenomena like echoes and reverberation

Essential Study Resources

Great physics scores come from smart, varied practice. Here’s how you should be using this website:

  • NCERT Solutions: Get clear, step-by-step answers for every in-text and end-of-chapter question from the NCERT textbook — perfect for building conceptual clarity and board-exam-ready answer writing.
  • Numericals Masterclass: Physics is a “doing” subject, not just a “reading” one. Our dedicated numerical banks for each chapter (Motion, Force, Work & Energy, and Sound) ensure you don’t just understand the formula — you know exactly when and how to apply it.
  • Interactive Quizzes: Test your speed and accuracy with chapter-wise MCQs designed to mirror the competency-based format used in your Periodic Tests and internal assessments.

Physics Exam Weightage & Blueprint (2026-27)

According to the official CBSE Course Structure for the Annual Examination (80 marks theory), Physics is assessed under Unit III: Motion, Force, Work and Sound.

UnitChapters CoveredMarks Weightage
Unit III: Motion, Force, Work and SoundMotion, Force & Laws of Motion, Work/Energy/Simple Machines, Sound23 Marks

Key Blueprint Insights:

  • This makes Physics the second-highest weighted unit in the Class 9 Science paper.
  • The question paper design allocates 50% marks to Knowledge & Understanding, 30% to Application of Concepts, and 20% to Formulate/Analyze/Evaluate/Create — meaning graph-based and numerical-application questions are increasingly important.
  • Expect Assertion-Reasoning, Case-Based, and Source-Based questions, in line with the competency-based education (CBE) push under NEP 2020.

How to Master Class 9 Physics

After years of teaching this exact syllabus, here are my top three tips:

  1. Understand the “Why,” Not Just the “What”: Don’t memorize that F = ma. Understand why a heavier object needs more force to accelerate at the same rate as a lighter one. Rote learning fails the moment CBSE tweaks a question’s wording — real understanding never does.
  2. Make Friends with Graphs: Motion and Sound are graph-heavy chapters. Practice drawing and reading position-time, velocity-time, and displacement-time graphs by hand until interpreting slopes and areas becomes second nature.
  3. Master Your SI Units: A huge number of marks are lost to careless unit errors (writing ‘m/s’ instead of ‘m/s²’, or forgetting to convert km/h to m/s). Build the habit of writing units at every single step of a numerical, not just the final answer.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q1: How many Physics chapters are there in CBSE Class 9 (2026-27)?
There are 4 core Physics chapters under Unit III: Motion, Force and Laws of Motion, Work, Energy and Simple Machines, and Sound.

Q2: What is the toughest topic in Class 9 Physics?
Most students find the numerical problems in Motion (kinematic equations) and Force (Newton’s Second Law) the most challenging initially, simply because they require strong mathematical application rather than memorization. With consistent practice, though, these become the easiest scoring areas.

Q3: Has the Class 9 Physics syllabus changed for 2026-27?
Yes — under the new NEP-aligned structure, topics like Simple Machines (levers, pulleys, mechanical advantage) are now integrated directly into the Work and Energy chapter, and units are taught with a greater emphasis on graphical analysis and competency-based application.

Q4: How much do Physics chapters weigh in the final Class 9 exam?
Physics chapters (Unit III) carry 23 marks out of the 80-mark theory paper, making it a high-priority unit for scoring well overall.
